Kim Denning Expert PageANNOUNCER: Welcome to the VTalk Radio Photographer Spotlight with your host, Damien Allen. DAMIEN: Good morning, and welcome to the VTalk Radio Photographer Spotlight. I'm Damien Allen. in for the vacationing John Bentley, and today, via phone in the studio, we have with us Kim Denning of Beautiful Expressions of Spring Hill, Kansas. Good morning Kim. Welcome to the program.
KIM: Good morning. Thanks for having me.
DAMIEN: You're very welcome. We're very happy that you're here. I understand you've got a big family photography business down there in Kansas. How's it going and what are you doing?
KIM: It's good. It's good. I enjoy taking pictures of families and children, and it's awesome. And I love meeting new people, so right now my studio is in a small town, and it's just great. I love it.
DAMIEN: What other types of photography services do you offer besides family portraiture?
KIM: I do high school seniors, which I love, and I also do children.
DAMIEN: How long have you been doing this?
KIM: I have been doing this for about four years now, and it just keeps growing, so I just keep kind of going with it.
DAMIEN: Now, with the high school seniors, are you doing location shoots, or are you basically a studio photographer?
KIM: I can do location shoots. There are some great places in Kansas City, actually downtown area, some wonderful places to go; basically, anywhere, I'll take them where they want to go. Whatever is their spot, whatever reflects them, I'll go wherever. I do, however, have a home studio right next to my house. We live on five acres, and then I also have a landscape area for outdoor photography.
DAMIEN: So, basically, the palette's wide open. You can travel to a location that they are happy with or you have outdoor/indoor facilities on your own property and that works out great. Is it more a traditional . . . I don't want to date myself, but I remember back in the mid-80's . . . yeah, mid-80's, right . . . where you had one particular type of senior photo, where it was “here, kid, put on this suit coat or this sweater over a dress shirt and tie and this is your senior photo, even if you never look like this ever again in your entire life and you never dress like this.” What do you tell the seniors when they are looking to get their photos done?
KIM: I basically tell them, bring in whatever makes them feel comfortable; basically, their everyday stuff. I want them to be comfortable and I want them to have fun. We're going to laugh, we're going to, you know, I'm going to joke around with you. I want them to bring something that represents them. We do many different things with any item that they bring in that means something to them and reflects them. That's what it's all about.
DAMIEN: What are some of the communities in your area that you service?
KIM: My surrounding communities are Overland Park; let's see, Lewisburg, Gardner, Paola, Olathe; and again, I can go anywhere. Kansas City is just about a 45-minute drive for me to get down there, but the Plaza is also an awesome place to do photography. It's got some great stuff down there.
DAMIEN: So, you've been in business now for four years, correct?
KIM: Yes.
DAMIEN: What made you decide to become a photographer in the first place?
KIM: Well, it started when I was young. My dad actually did photography just as a hobby. We lived in California, and he would go to a photo shoot . . . they had areas where they could just go shoot, but they had models out there and they could just take pictures, and he would take us with them. He has a picture of Heather Locklear when she first started out. And, he would enter in competitions and stuff once we moved to a small town, so the local fair, and I always had a camera in my hand and I always wanted to take pictures, and I always made my friends pose, and that's how it all started.
DAMIEN: That's great when you can make a living doing something you absolutely love doing, so no complaints there. What type of advice do you give for clients when they are coming in for a family photo shoot or to have their children shot; or even, we already talked about the seniors, you know, bring what you want. What makes a good photo shoot for a family?
KIM: Well, what I like them to know is that it's not going to be, look at the camera and say cheese and smile. I usually try to discourage the parents from telling the kids to, you know, smile, because I like to capture the natural wonders of children, just what they do. I think, to me, that's more the picture you want than them looking straight into the camera and just smiling.
DAMIEN: Could you please tell the listening audience your website and contact information, Kim.
